Introduction
|
|
Language is pervasive in our human world, so specialized applications of technology involving language will be legion. Here are brief accounts of some fields which are peripheral to language technology.
- Controlled languages. Some companies choose to optimize the performance of language technology, especially machine translation, by imposing strict standards on the text used for official purposes (such as technical manuals).
- Voice recognition. This can be used as a convenient proof of identity
- Style recognition. It appears to be possible to detect significant "key signatures", whether in use of words, or performance of routine tasks, which can also be applied to validate authorised users and detect fraud.
- Automatic interpreting. This is a combination of speech recognition and generation with machine translation, and is not as yet a robust technology. Information Technology is being used, however, to give ready access to human interpreters, remotely, on demand.
